Influence of the main roof on the parameters of the abutment pressure zone in the selvedge of the seam

The distribution of the abutment pressure in the selvedge of the coal seam plays a decisive role in the instability of the surrounding rocks, the potential hazard of rock bursts in underground mining. Based on the study of the physical model in the laboratory and the theoretical analysis of the stress state, the characteristics of the distribution of the abutment pressure zone are investigated. The simulation results determined the area of influence of the abutment pressure is located in the selvedge of the coal seam, the position of the stress peak shows a change and a clear separation at the stage before and after the collapse of the main roof. Before the collapse of the main roof, the stress peak was distributed near the goaf boundary, with a maximum value. Under the load of the roof layers, the main roof console drops, turns and breaks at position 1—1.5 times the thickness of the seam (according to the results of laboratory modeling). And especially, the stress peak moves from the edge of the coal face into the deepest parts of the coal seam immediately after the main roof collapses, and a reduced stress zone is formed in the selvedge of the coal seam. The results of this study can be very useful to explain the reasons for some of the dynamic influences of the main roof, and the necessary solutions to control mining pressure in underground mining.
