Suspended irrigation units to suppress dusting and gas exhaust of dump trucks

The major sources of high dusting during open pit mining are listed. The dust contents of air inside modern open pit mines are presented. The methods of hydraulic suppression of dusting along haul roads are reviewed. It is proposed to wet road beds and to sprinkle air using suspended irrigation units mounted on dump trucks. The developed mathematical model describes fixation of air-born dust by droplets of water sprayed through the nozzles of the proposed facility. The engineering data and performance figures of the irrigation units are estimated for the mediumand heavy-duty dump trucks. The comparison of the experience of sprinkler irrigation machines and suspended irrigation modules with the same characteristics allows drawing a conclusion that the latter ensure uniform wetting of haul roads and better confinement of dust emission at an appreciable saving of materials and energy. Moreover, owing to reasonable water consumption, the suspended irrigation units have no destructive effect on the road beds during wetting. Replacement of sprinkler irrigation machines by the suspended irrigation modules produces the maximal economic effect in case of acute shortage of mine water. The practical example of such replacement demonstrates the resultant reduction in daily flow of mine water close to 200 times.
