Distance optimization in overburden haulage by dump trucks using mining and geological information systems

The comprehensiveness and variability of overburden flow formation at different stages of open pit mine planning and design are analyzed. The recommendations are given to involve mining and geological information systems (MGIS) in distance optimization in overburden haulage. The detailed description of the methodology developed by the authors for the distance optimization in overburden haulage in deep open pit mines using MGIS is given. The optimization source data and their preparation for using in MGIS are described. For each overburden unit block, the multipath analyses of haulage distances are performed. On the basis of the comparison of haulage distances for each block based on the minimum transportation work criterion, the optimum directions of haulage paths are selected. The results of each optimization stage in MGIS are illustrated. Using the obtained results, the overburden volume in an open pit is distributed between flows and dump zones on the basis of minimum haulage distance. The developed methodology was many times tested at open pit mines, and resulted not only in distance optimization for overburden flows but in increased economic efficiency of planning of mining operations generally.
