Influence of operating modes of heavy-duty high-voltage nonlinear power consumer using thyristor converters on power quality in mine supply system

Maintenance of standard power quality is an important task in the mining and metallurgical industry where energy-intensive nonlinear loads exist side by side with sensitive equipment. The present-day research is often limited to measurements carried out only at the connection point of an intense high-voltage nonlinear load, or at the overall connection points, which impedes a full analysis of harmonic distortion patterns from the connection point of a heavy-duty high-voltage nonlinear power consumer to the in-site supply system of a facility of the mining and metallurgical industry. The article analyzes power quality indicators at three characteristic points of an in-site power supply system of a production plant, where the heaviest-duty nonlinear power consumer is a DC arc furnace. The measurements are carried out using multifunctional power quality meter Binom3. As a result of the experimental research, the values of the harmonic distortions of current and voltage were determined at the measurement points depending on an operating mode of the arc furnace. It is shown how the current limiting coil used in the in-site power supply system adversely affects the power quality at the connection point of the heavy-duty high-voltage nonlinear power consumer. The scope of the analysis embraced the causes of high-level even harmonics at the initial stage of melting operation by the circuit diagrams of the 6-pulse and 12-pulse rectifiers in the electric facility of the DC arc furnace. It is revealed that higher characteristic harmonics pass from the heavy-duty high-voltage nonlinear power consumer, directly through a reducing transformer, to sensitive low-voltage loads. It is shown that during the whole melting operation of the arc furnace, phase voltage falls take place at the measurement points with a duration to 0.2 s and depth to 30%. For the industrial power supply system in the mining and metallurgical sector, containing one or a few heavy-duty nonlinear loads and some power consumers sensitive to harmonic distortions and voltage falls, an algorithm is proposed, that shows the sequence of selection of representative points for the advisable installation of measurement tools for monitoring power quality.
