Classification of systems of mining with tailings-based backfill

Authors: Pirogov G. G.

Ore deposits occurring in favorable climatic and geological conditions are either depleted so far, or their remaining reserves are extracted from great depths and at high losses of useful minerals which have to be left in scaled up pillars. Transition to the tailings-based backfill technology seems unavoidable. The systems of mining with backfill are disadvantageous for the high cost. One of the ways of reducing the cost of backfilling is the use of backfill totally or partly composed of tailings, which, among other things, improves the environmental quality. The domestic and foreign practices of mining possess a wide variety of mining systems with backfill, while their classification lacks sufficient attention. This article makes an attempt to try to propose a classification of the total tailings-based backfill technology, i.e. without addition of crushed stone or sand-and-gravel mixtures. For thick ore bodies, we proposed a system of mining by continuous slicing with total tailings-based backfill prepared using underground plants. Such tailings-based backfill represents manmade mineral objects suitable for secondary development in the future.

Keywords: ore body, higher losses, high overburden pressure, backfill, tailings, classification of backfill-based mining systems, stoping, environmental quality improvement, backfilling cost reduction, manmade mineral objects.
