Hydrogen-powered mining trucks

One of the largest expense items in the mining industry is power consumed by mineral mining and processing operations and supplied by diesel fuel or electric energy. For mines in remote areas, the main source of energy is diesel fuel. An essential fault in operation of diesel equipment is emission of toxic substances, gas contamination of air and high smokiness, especially at deep levels in mines. Actually, it is possible to expand energy supply and to abate the adverse effect on the environment using alternative fuels, for instance, hydrogen which is the eco-friendliest alternative fuel produced using renewable energy. Dump trucks powered by hydrogen possess essential benefits, which is proved by their field experience in European countries, in the USA and in Japan. Such dump trucks produce no exhaust gases, which makes air in the work zone purer, especially in deep open pits or in underground mining. While the cost of diesel fuel consistently grows, the cost of hydrogen fuel gets lower year after year. The operational environment of dump trucks guarantees the demand for hydrogen energy in the mining industry. The costs of diesel fuel and electric energy in mining are unreasonable, especially in remote and isolate areas. Mining companies, more than any other, are interested in transition to hydrogen power.
