Coal cutting by сutter heads with lever-and-impulse drives

Discontinuous coal cutting process typical of coal cutter–loaders with lever-andimpulse drives (LID) is investigated. The research was carried out in a full-scale coal and cement bock equipped with coal cutting machines with different circuitries of lever-and-impulse drives and advance mechanisms. The comparison included data on operation of a coal cutter–loader with a conventional drive. The research finds out that loading of cutter heads on the cutter–loaders with the lever-and-impulse drives is cyclical and changes from zero to maximal values. The increase in the cutting force moment from zero to a maximum causes the decrease in the rate speed of the cutter head from a maximum in noncutting to zero. Furthermore, it is found that for the cutting machines with the lever-and-impulse drives without a differential advance mechanism, the increase in the coal cuttability increases the cutting force moment at the same depth of cut. Vice versa, in the cutting machines with the lever-and-impulse drives with a differential advance mechanism, with the increasing cuttability, the depth of cut decreases at a slight change in the moment of the cutting forces. The tests show that the force and energy data of the cutting process of the machines with the lever-and-impulse drives are the same as in the excavators with the conventional drives. During uneven motion of the cutter head with the lever-and-impulse drive, the cutter head experiences the inertia moment comparable with the cutting force moment in the interval of time of accelerated motion. In this case, the value of the torque on the cutter head drive shaft and in the drive transmission is equal to the sum of the cutting force and inertia moments.
