Impervious seal of mixed-type cast-and-concrete lining

According to geological data on new potassium deposits in Russia, at the depths greater than 150–300 m, artesian aquifers and difficult-to-freeze brines occur. Shafting in such complicated hydrogeological conditions is commonly carried out under protection of frozen wall and mixed-type cast-and-concrete lining. The lining is composed of bolt-jointed tubes with horizontal lead gasket seals set between the tubing flanges. Water-proofing of the lining is ensured by grouting of the rock–lining space and by packing of the lead gaskets in the tubing joints. This study leaves aside the issues connected with consolidation of the lining and only pays attention to the efficiency of lead gaskets used as the impervious seal of the tubing lining. This problem was addressed by such famous scientists as Yu.P. Olkhovikov, A.N. Andreichev, V.A. Fedyukin and others. Based on the implemented research and the unique industrial know-how, GSKShakhtproekt LLC proposes an alternative approach to water-proofing of tubing lining in mine shafts by replacing lead gaskets by profiles made of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber widely used in sealing of reinforced concrete blocks in construction of railway and highway tunnels and subways. The calculations and lab-scale studies prove applicability of EPDM rubber profiles as impervious seal for mixed-type cast-and-concrete tubing lining.
