Field data analysis in construction of escalator tunnels at Obvodny Kanal and Admiralteyskaya Stations of the Saint-Petersburg Metro using tunnel boring machine

In 2009–2011 in the Saint-Petersburg Metro, two escalator tunnels were constructed using tunnel boring machine (TBM) at the stations Obvodny Kanal (October–December 2009) and Admiralteyskaya (January–April 2011). Those were respectively the second and third escalator tunnels constructed using TBM under loading of soil in the world (the first experience was gained in inclined heading in construction of the Marina Roshcha Station in the Moscow Metro). This article discusses heading of escalator tunnels. The field data were obtained by Lenmetrogiprotrans Research, Survey and Design Institute during geotechnical monitoring. The emphasis was laid on the influence of the tunneling technology on ground surface subsidence. The time curves of ground surface subsidence were plotted, and the subsidence trough draft by the end of geotechnical monitoring was drawn. The time–displacement curves were plotted by the readings of underground extensometers. The heading phases of the highest effect on ground surface subsidence are analyzed separately: loading generated by soil mass on the heading face and injection of grouting mortar in-between soil and casing. The subsidence monitoring duration is assessed. The subsidence flow chart subject to the adopted heading technology is proposed.

Keywords: escalator tunnel, subsidence trough, grouting, soil-generated load, field data, geotechnical monitoring.
