Prospects of high benching in hybrid mining of the Svetlinskoe gold deposit

Authors: Fedotenko V. S., Strukov K. I., Berger R. V.

One of the ways of essential improvement in economic performance of open pit mines is transition to mining with high benches (to 30–50 m) with novel cutting and loading equipment. Currently, standards of bench heights in open pit mining are insufficiently presented in process design rules and open pit mine planning procedures. For rational design choice, it is required to carry out technical-and-economic assessment of an optimality criterion to estimate geotechnical system parameters at different stages of mining. The open pit mining tendencies are described. The mechanism of increment in efficient open pit mining depth in coal fields is presented. The ways of advancement of hybrid mining technology at thick deposits of strategic ore reserves to ensure complete extraction of mineral resources, efficient performance of mines and reduction in accident risk in mining are outlined. The Svetlinskoe gold deposit is characterized. Prerequisites of transition to high-bench mining in Svetlinsky open pit mine are analyzed. The prospects are shown for the development of scientific framework for working zone dimension control in the open pit mines owing to the prompt transition to high benching. Advisability of adapting the high-bench open pit mining technology to the hybrid geotechnology for thick ore deposits is justified. Potential increment in volume of mineral extraction by open pit mining and optimization of surface mining scheme and parameters, considering further transition to hybrid mining in the Svetlinskoe deposit is estimated.
